About Hwy 71 Classic
Highway 71 Classic is a 71-mile route that follows the historic road south from Fayetteville to Mountainburg, tracing one of the main arteries of the local road-riding network.
The route leaves Walker Park and rolls through Greenland, West Fork and Winslow before climbing both sides of Mount Gaylor, one of the defining stretches of road in the Boston Mountains. Near the top, Artist Point offers one of the best overlooks in the region.
For years, riders have tackled this same out-and-back as the Highway 71 Classic, sometimes as a fully supported fondo and sometimes simply because the event was too good to let disappear.
Notes
- Refueling: There's a gas station in Greenland, West Fork and Winslow. The park in Mountainburg sometimes has an operating water fountain and restrooms, but don't count on them. If in a pinch, try the nearby library or city hall.
- Mount Gaylor: The route crosses Mount Gaylor twice, with a long climb and fast descent in each direction. Pace the first crossing and save something for the return.
- Dinosaur Park: The route's turnaround point is the community dinosaur park in Mountainburg, which is pretty cool.
- Hwy 71: Use caution when riding on Highway 71.
