A classic loop through Devil’s Den State Park, climbing the famous switchbacks in what locals for years have called the "Winslow Death March."
About Devil's Den
Devil’s Den is a Fayetteville classic, known for years among local riders as the "Winslow Death March."
The route heads south through Strickler before dropping on AR-170 into the Lee Creek Valley and the hardwood forests of Devil’s Den State Park. From the valley floor, AR-74 climbs the park’s famous switchbacks toward Winslow before Scenic Highway 71 carries riders north through West Fork and Greenland.
The switchbacks are also part of local racing history. Joe Martin Stage Race used the climb for its uphill time trial, while pro road-race fields have attacked the same road in reverse, descending through the park at race speed.
Notes
- Refueling: Stops for water and snacks include the Hogeye Mall, the Devi's Den gift shop (by the pool) and a gas station on Hwy 71 in Winslow.
- Park descents: Use caution descending into the park in either direction, but be extra careful when riding down the switchbacks.
- Winslow descent: When riding counter-clockwise, the Winslow approach includes an extremely steep and tight switchback with little room for error. Use caution.
